Snow Arc Guards™
Do I Need Snow Guards on My Stile Roof?
Need a Roof Layout, Quote, or Order?
Need a Roof Layout, Quote, or Order?
If you have owned a Stile Spanish Tile metal roof for a winter season or more, you may have experienced snow and ice moving differently than they do on rougher or more textured roofing materials. Smooth metal roof surfaces can allow snow and ice to release suddenly, especially during freeze-thaw cycles or warming periods.
Snow guards help manage snow and ice movement on the roof. They are often considered above entryways, walkways, driveways, garage approaches, outdoor equipment areas, landscaping, and other places where sudden snow release could create a practical or safety concern.
Snow Arc Guard™ products are designed to help manage snow and ice movement on Stile Spanish Tile roofing systems. When properly selected, laid out, and installed, they help distribute snow loads and greatly reduce the likelihood of sudden snow release from roof areas where snow retention is desired.
Snow guards may be worth considering when a roof sheds toward areas people use or property owners need to protect from sudden snow movement.
Common areas of concern include:
• Front entries.
• Porches.
• Walkways.
• Driveways.
• Garage doors.
• Outdoor equipment.
• Patio areas.
• Frequently occupied spaces.
• Landscaping near the eave.
The need depends on the roof and the site. A roof section over an unused yard may not need the same level of snow retention as a roof section over a driveway or main entrance.
Metal roofing is durable and sheds water well, but those same surface characteristics can allow snow and ice to move quickly when conditions change. Snow may stay in place during cold weather, then release when the sun warms the roof surface or when temperatures rise above freezing.
Factors that can increase concern include:
• Roof pitch.
• Roof panel length.
• Snow depth.
• Ice layers.
• Sun exposure.
• Freeze-thaw cycles.
• Smoothness of the roof surface.
• Traffic or property below the roof edge that may emit heat or vibrations.
• Roof geometry and valleys.
Snow guards greatly reduce snow avalanches. They are one part of a roof-specific plan, and the layout matters.
Stile Spanish Tile metal roofing lacks flat mounting spots for traditional snow retention systems. The roof profile has troughs and crests that affect snow guard placement. Most brackets designed for metal roofs do not sit correctly on a Stile Spanish Tile roof.
Snow Arc Guard™ is currently documented and warrantied only for Stile Spanish Tile metal roofing systems. Most Snow Arc Guard™ models install in the Stile trough. The SAG 015 Oval installs on the crest profile and can hold slightly more weight per bracket.
Before ordering, confirm that the roof is a compatible Stile Spanish Tile metal roofing system. Do not install Snow Arc Guard™ on another roof profile unless Sands Works provides written project-specific guidance, including whether any warranty coverage applies.
Not every roof project requires the same snow retention coverage on every roof face. On long roof sections where only specific areas require protection, Targeted Coverage can reduce material costs while still protecting high-priority areas.
Targeted coverage may be considered for areas above:
• Entryways.
• Walkways.
• Driveways.
• Garage approaches.
• Outdoor equipment.
• Frequently occupied spaces.
Full Width coverage is most common, but for really long roof Widths, a Targeted approach can save on cost while protecting only what is necessary.
The right approach depends on roof geometry, snow depth, owner expectations, where snow release matters, and the layout generated for the project.
Targeted coverage must always be requested. Here is an example: TargetedCoverageExample
A home has a Stile Spanish Tile metal roof with one roof face above a front walkway and another above a driveway. Snow releasing into the backyard is not a major concern, but snow release onto the walkway and driveway is.
In that case, the owner and contractor may review a targeted coverage layout for the roof faces where snow retention is desired. The calculator can be used to create a bracket layout based on the roof measurements, pitch, selected model, and snow depth, but targetted layouts require additional brackets every 36" upslope as shown in the above image.
If the owner wants snow retention on all roof faces, a full coverage layout may be more appropriate. The decision should be based on the roof, the site, and the areas where snow retention provides practical value.
Snow guards are not a guarantee that snow or ice damage will be prevented. They also do not replace proper roof design, proper roof installation, local code compliance, or professional judgment on unusual roof conditions.
Snow Arc Guard™ brackets do not warranty:
• Roof systems or roofing panels
• Adhesives or adhesive failure
• Roof, property, or consequential damage
• Installation labor or installation workmanship
• Snow or ice release
• Customer measurement errors
• Field modifications or changed bracket placement
The full warranty controls warranty terms, exclusions, claim requirements, and remedies.
The Snow Arc Guard™ Calculator App creates a layout based on the information entered by the user. The generated layout serves as an installation reference for bracket model, quantity, row location, and bracket center spacing.
Accurate measurements are important.
The calculator can only be as accurate as the information entered. Incorrect roof width, panel length, pitch, roof shape, or snow depth can produce an incorrect layout.
The generated layout is not just a quantity estimate. It specifies bracket locations, row positions, and spacing designed for the measurements entered into the calculator.
If you are unsure of a measurement, verify it before ordering or request assistance from Sands Works.
In general, it is safer to slightly overestimate a measurement than underestimate it. Underestimating roof dimensions can result in a layout that provides less snow retention than intended.
Warranty coverage depends on installation according to the generated layout and installation instructions.
Snow Arc Guard™ brackets require:
• Everseal Surebond SB-190 adhesive
• Clean bonding surfaces.
• 70–90% isopropyl alcohol for surface cleaning.
• Minimum 50°F adhesive application temperature.
• Proper adhesive squeeze-out and sealed edges.
• 7–28 days of cure time depending on conditions.
• Required roof-panel-seam reinforcement near panel seams with the included SB-190 adhesive when crest-mounted models are installed on a roof-panel-seam.
If roof access is unsafe or you are not comfortable working on the roof, hire a qualified installer. Most installations can be done from a ladder at the gutter/eve of the roof.
For complete installation requirements, adhesive application patterns, seam reinforcement procedures, and curing guidelines, refer to the Snow Arc Guard™ Installation Guide.
Not always. Some projects use partial coverage snow retention across a select few roofing surfaces. Others use full coverage (all roof surfaces). The right layout depends on the roof, snow conditions, and areas below the roof.
Yes, but it must follow a custom Sands Works layout. An example is shown here: SnowArcGuards/blog/TargetedCoverageExample. Do not place snow gaurds randomly above a doorway. a layout is required to ensure the layout actually performs as intended. You can request 'Targeted' coverage when filling out a roof section layout within the Snow Arc Guard™ Calculator App →. Do not guess bracket quantity or spacing. Use the calculator layout or a custom Sands Works layout. Field changes can affect performance and may void warranty coverage.
No. Snow Arc Guard™ brackets are currently documented and warrantied only for Stile Spanish Tile metal roofing systems unless Sands Works provides written project-specific guidance.
No. When installed as directed, Snow Arc Guard™ brackets are adhesive-mounted and do not require drilling or roof penetrations.
Incorrect measurements can produce an incorrect layout and may void warranty coverage if undersized. Verify roof width, panel length, pitch, shape, snow depth, model, and quantity before installing. See the Measure My Roof - Guide for tips on how to measure.
You may need snow guards on your Stile roof if snow or ice release creates a practical concern around entries, walkways, driveways, equipment, landscaping beneath the eve, or occupied spaces. The key is to use a roof-specific product and a calculated layout rather than guessing.
Snow Arc Guard™ is designed for Stile Spanish Tile metal roofing and uses calculator-generated layouts to guide bracket quantity and placement.
Measure your roof sections and use the Snow Arc Guard™ Calculator App to create layout patterns. If the roof has unusual geometry or you are unsure how to enter the measurements, request help before ordering or installing by emailing snowarcguards@sandsworks.com.
